Fiocruz, the State Government of Ceará and the State University of Ceará (UECE, acronym in Portuguese) sealed, this Thursday (8/5), a cooperation agreement for the development and production of the HH-120-Defenser vaccine against COVID-19, the elaboration of research projects and technological development. Providing scientific knowledge about the different aspects of the Triatominae, the insects that spread Chagas disease, also known as kissing bugs, is the goal of the book Triatominae: the biology of Chagas disease vectors. The book has 20 chapters about natural history and the evolution of the subfamily, its taxonomy, physiology, interaction with parasites, control of the insect, and its resistance to pesticides, among other topics.

By means of the Immunobiological Technology Institute (Bio-Manguinhos/Fiocruz), Fiocruz has reached 80.4 million doses of the COVID-19 vaccine made available to the National Immunization Program (PNI, in the Portuguese acronym), delivering approximately 2.2 million doses this Friday (July 30th). Of these, 76.4 million were processed at Fiocruz and 4 million were imported ready to use from the Serum Institute, in India. Another milestone of the foundation is related to national sovereignty when it comes to vaccine production.

Three projects led by Fiocruz researchers are among the ten selected worldwide by the Grand Challenges ICODA COVID-19 Data Science, an initiative that supports health data projects to respond more accurately to the pandemic and possible challenges in the future. With support from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the Minderoo Foundation, and Microsoft's AI for Health program, they will receive a fund of US$100,000 for their development for one year.

The dispersion of diseases in the Amazon is directly related to the agricultural development trajectory of municipalities and the loss of biodiversity. Malaria is prevalent in municipalities with an agro-extractivist profile and with forest cover, that is, half of the Amazon territory. Dengue and chikungunya occur more frequently in municipalities of recent urban expansion, such as on the southern edge of the Amazon in transition to the Cerrado. Cutaneous leishmaniasis is prevalent in municipalities with large herds where there are higher rates of deforestation and loss of biodiversity.

A recently published study, with the participation of the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation - Fiocruz, suggests that the Delta variant of the new coronavirus, first detected in India, may increase the risk of reinfection. The research shows that the serum of people previously infected by other strains is less powerful against this viral variant. The problem is markedly observed among individuals previously infected by the Gamma variant, originally identified in Manaus, Brazil, and currently the dominant strain in the country, as well as by the Beta variant, first detected in South Africa.
