A Fiocruz research has observed that the drug Atazanavir, used against HIV, was able to inhibit viral replication and to reduce the production of proteins that are related to the inflammatory process in the lungs, and therefore to the worsening of the clinical symptoms of the disease. An unprecedented study, conducted by the research group on Health in the Prisions [Saúde nas Prisões] of the National School of Public Health (Ensp/Fiocruz), and coordinated by Alexandra Sánchez, through technical cooperation with the Public Prosecutor's Office/RJ, analyzed the causes of deaths in the Prison System of the State of Rio de Janeiro (2016-2017). O eixo Cenários Epidemiológicos, tem como objetivos: 1) permitir o acompanhamento permanente da evolução da pandemia no Brasil; 2) estimar a velocidade de espalhamento da epidemia; 3)avaliar e propor medidas populacionais de contenção ou de diminuição da velocidade de propagação; 4) contribuir para a alocação de recursos dos serviços de saúde, baseada na estimativa do número de casos graves.
