The executive Director of the United Nations Population Fund (Unfpa), Natalia Kanem, visited Fiocruz on October 15th. During the visit, Kanem met with the president of the Foundation, Nísia Trindade Lima, and researchers in areas related to population and development.

With almost 20 thousand premature births per year and an estimated neonatal mortality rate of 28 deaths per thousand births, Mozambique has taken an important step towards neonatal health. Last Friday (10/26), the first Breast Milk Bank (BMB) opened with a great party in the country, at Central Hospital Maputo. This is the second facility in Africa following the Brazilian model: Cape Verde has one BMB operating since 2011, and the second facility is under implementation process. A study conducted by Fiocruz Pernambuco reveals how zika virus got to Brazil, filling a gap in the literature addressing this topic. To date, there have been 2,043 human cases including 676 fatalities, mainly occurring in ten Brazilian states including Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo.
