However, some groups of people have been more affected other than others, and the more vulnerable in the community, societies and groups have borne the greatest brunt. The disease has affected men, women and people of other genders differently.

Researchers from the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation develop a plan to support the fight against Covid-19 among indigenous peoples. One of the goals is to intensify surveillance and improve information about the impacts of the pandemic on these populations, through six lines of action. The initiative mobilized different units and vice-presidencies and was highlighted by the president of Fiocruz, Nísia Trindade Lima.

In partnership with an international research group, Fiocruz has obtained funding to conduct real-time analyses of gender dynamics during the Covid-19 pandemic. The research will be made possible through a $1.6 million grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to Simon Fraiser University (Canada), which is passing on some of the resources to other institutions to include more countries in this analysis.

Chikungunya is a disease caused by a virus, which is transmitted through the bite of the Aedes aegypti mosquito, which may cause symptoms like fever, skin rashes and body pain. According to the Ministry of Health, from January to June this year, more than 48,300 probable cases of the disease were reported in Brazil. The disease is mainly concentrated in the North-Eastern region, which presented the greatest incidence rates, with 48.3 cases per 100 thousand inhabitants. Only the State of Bahia concentrated approximately 45% of the probable chikungunya cases in the country.

Data from Fiocruz InfoGripe show that many states are still climbing up the first wave of new weekly cases of Severe Acute Respiratory Infection (SARI). This is the ongoing situation in all states of the Southern region, in addition to Sergipe and Mato Grosso do Sul. Other states are already showing signs of the beginning of the so-called “second wave”.

Going back to school may represent an extra risk for more than 9.3 million Brazilians (4.4% of the overall population) who are elderly or adults (18 years and up) with chronic health conditions and at risk for Covid-19 infection. Researchers of the Oswaldo Cruz Institute (IOC/Fiocruz) have identified a new strain of the influenza virus in a patient in the city of Ibiporã, in the southern state of Paraná. Analysis have pointed to the presence of the influenza virus A(H1N2)v, which causes infection in pigs. The case was reported to the Ministry of Health, which then notified the World Health Organization (WHO), according to the international health regulation.
