The Observatory of Climate and Health of the Institute of Scientific and Technological Communication and Information in Health (ICICT/Fiocruz), in a partnership with InfoAmazonia and the Federal University of Acre, invests in the project Engolindo Fumaça (Swallowing Smoke), a research on the impacts of the pollution resulting from wildfires in the Amazon during the COVID-19 pandemic. The COVID-19 pandemic has exposed the high dependence of Latin America and the Caribbean on imported consumables and technologies for health, including vaccines. As a response to this issue, member states of the Pan-American Health Organization (PAHO) launched last Friday (August 27th) a collaborative platform that brings together governments and interested parties of the public and private sectors, taking up the mission of facilitating the expansion of services and production related to health in the Americas.

An unprecedented survey by the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz) shows that the number of COVID-19 deaths in Brazil in 2020 was 18.2% higher than recorded. The analysis indicated that there were 230,452 deaths from the disease last year, not 194,949. The results of the study, funded by the Fiocruz Program to Foster Innovation (Inova Fiocruz), will be published in the Fiocruz COVID-19 Monitoring panel.

Effectiveness studies of COVID-19 vaccines have demonstrated the immunization importance for protection against severe cases and hospitalization against the new variants. In June, data showed a 92% effectiveness of the AstraZeneca vaccine for hospitalizations against the Delta variant. Now, a new study coordinated by Oxford University in the United Kingdom points out that the Pfizer and AstraZeneca vaccines, this one produced in Brazil by Fiocruz, also guarantee protection against infection with the Delta variant of COVID-19.

Fiocruz, the State Government of Ceará and the State University of Ceará (UECE, acronym in Portuguese) sealed, this Thursday (8/5), a cooperation agreement for the development and production of the HH-120-Defenser vaccine against COVID-19, the elaboration of research projects and technological development. The agreement, signed by the Fiocruz president, Nísia Trindade Lima, and the Ceará governor, Camilo Santana, expands the Fiocruz partnership with the Ceará state in the research and science areas for the search of solutions in the health field.

Providing scientific knowledge about the different aspects of the Triatominae, the insects that spread Chagas disease, also known as kissing bugs, is the goal of the book Triatominae: the biology of Chagas disease vectors. By means of the Immunobiological Technology Institute (Bio-Manguinhos/Fiocruz), Fiocruz has reached 80.4 million doses of the COVID-19 vaccine made available to the National Immunization Program (PNI, in the Portuguese acronym), delivering approximately 2.2 million doses this Friday (July 30th). Of these, 76.4 million were processed at Fiocruz and 4 million were imported ready to use from the Serum Institute, in India. Another milestone of the foundation is related to national sovereignty when it comes to vaccine production.

Three projects led by Fiocruz researchers are among the ten selected worldwide by the Grand Challenges ICODA COVID-19 Data Science, an initiative that supports health data projects to respond more accurately to the pandemic and possible challenges in the future. With support from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the Minderoo Foundation, and Microsoft's AI for Health program, they will receive a fund of US$100,000 for their development for one year.
