The largest set of favelas in Rio de Janeiro, with about 140,000 inhabitants, Maré will be the home of a study led by Fiocruz on the impact of COVID-19 vaccination on its population. The initiative is a collaboration between the Networks of Maré, Rio de Janeiro’s City Hall by means of the Municipal Secretariat of Health, and Fiocruz.

The dispersion of diseases in the Amazon is directly related to the agricultural development trajectory of municipalities and the loss of biodiversity. Malaria is prevalent in municipalities with an agro-extractivist profile and with forest cover, that is, half of the Amazon territory. Dengue and chikungunya occur more frequently in municipalities of recent urban expansion, such as on the southern edge of the Amazon in transition to the Cerrado. Cutaneous leishmaniasis is prevalent in municipalities with large herds where there are higher rates of deforestation and loss of biodiversity.

A recently published study, with the participation of the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation - Fiocruz, suggests that the Delta variant of the new coronavirus, first detected in India, may increase the risk of reinfection. The research shows that the serum of people previously infected by other strains is less powerful against this viral variant. The problem is markedly observed among individuals previously infected by the Gamma variant, originally identified in Manaus, Brazil, and currently the dominant strain in the country, as well as by the Beta variant, first detected in South Africa.

Over the past week, the four central units of large processing of molecular tests (RT-PCR) for Covid-19 coordinated by the Ministry of Health, with the support of Fiocruz, achieved the equivalent of 7 million samples processed, which represents about 40% of all testing done in the public system. In addition to processing the tests, Fiocruz is also responsible for their production, having already concluded its committment, signed in 2020 with the Ministry of Health (MS), of delivering 11.7 million molecular tests for Sars-CoV-2.

Last Sunday (June 20), the Municipality of Rio de Janeiro vaccinated the entire eligible population of the island of Paquetá (those above 18 years of age), including pregnant women, against Covid-19. The PaqueTá Vacinada project (Paquetá Is Vaccinated, in loose translation) by the Municipal Health Secretary (SMS) aims to evaluate the effects of large-scale vaccination on the island’s population and was approved by the Ethics Committees in Research of the municipal government and of the Ministry of Health (MS).

A study by Public Health England (PHE) showed that applying two doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine results in 92% effectiveness against hospitalization due to the Delta (B.1.617.2) variant of the Sars-CoV-2. The variant, formerly known as the Indian variant, has been spreading through the United Kingdom like wildfire and there have been confirmed cases in Brazil as well. The vaccine has also shown high effectiveness against the Alpha (B.1.1.7) variant, first identified in the UK, with a reduction of 86% in hospitalizations.
