Fiolab is inaugurated in Antarctica

With the inauguration of the new Comandante Ferraz Antarctic Station, Fiocruz has now a permanent laboratory on the continent. Fiolab is a biosafety laboratory prepared to respond to the country's epidemiological and sanitary surveillance needs, and to support research in health and the environment in Antarctica. The Foundation started its research on the continent last year.

Fiocruz and PAHO promote training for diagnosis of the novel coronavirus

Fiocruz is the leading institution in Brazil on tracking the virus situation. Although the country does not have a confirmed case yet, the institution has the first laboratory in South America prepared to identify Covid-19. In partnership with PAHO, Fiocruz promoted a training to health technicians from nine countries in Latin America to perform laboratory diagnosis of the virus.

Fiocruz researcher wins WHO award

João Aprígio is coordinator of the Global Network of Human Milk Banks and has been promoting breastfeeding in Brazil and abroad since 1998, contributing to reducing child mortality rates. He will receive the Dr. Lee Jong-wook Public Health award in May, during the World Health Assembly.

Fiocruz takes part on WHO event on Covid-19
The forum brought together about four hundred experts to discuss efforts against the virus. The president of Fiocruz, Nísia Trindade Lima, was one of the chairpersons of the session that defined the priorities of a global research agenda for the novel coronavirus emergency.
Institutions request researches to be carried out ethically in global health emergencies
With support of Fiocruz, a Call for Action demands that population affected is heard and better supported during emergencies such as infectious disease outbreaks. The Nuffield Council on Bioethics has also issued a report on the issue.

An Interview with Carlos Morel, former president of Fiocruz and general coordinator of the Center for Technological Development in Health, was published in Ciência Hoje magazine. In this interview, Morel discusses this collaboration, the battle against epidemics and the Brazilian science.
Chikungunya: study indicates a revision of case classification
The opinion article published in The American Journal of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene advocates that the current classification does not contribute with early detection and handling of potentially serious cases.
New diagnostic tools for leishmaniasis are tested
A research by Fiocruz Minas has shown that Lamp, the test used to detect a series of infectious diseases, can also be used to diagnose human visceral leishmaniasis. The method is simpler and easier to implement in smaller laboratories compared to current recommended tests.
Collaborating Center for Pharmaceutical Policies is redesigned by PAHO
The Department of Medicines Policy and Pharmaceutical Assistance of the National School of Public Health (Ensp/Fiocruz) was reassigned for the sixth consecutive time. The new work plan is valid for four years.
