The dispersion of diseases in the Amazon is directly related to the agricultural development trajectory of municipalities and the loss of biodiversity. Malaria is prevalent in municipalities with an agro-extractivist profile and with forest cover, that is, half of the Amazon territory. Dengue and chikungunya occur more frequently in municipalities of recent urban expansion, such as on the southern edge of the Amazon in transition to the Cerrado. Cutaneous leishmaniasis is prevalent in municipalities with large herds where there are higher rates of deforestation and loss of biodiversity. COVID…

Published in the United Nations (UN) SDG Action platform, the article Non-communicable diseases: a challenge for global cooperation, authored by the president of Fiocruz, Nísia Trindade Lima, and researcher Carlos Gadelha, highlights the importance of integrated public policies that consider human health in its quality-of-life dimension, avoiding focusing on just a few diseases. "More than looking at a single disease, we need to look at health conditions and health systems. The worst thing that can happen for sustainability and development is fragmented actions. The system must be prepared to…

Economy or health? This false dichotomy used as an argument against pandemic control measures in Brazil has lost yet another nuance. If decision-makers were guided by ideal information that allowed them to adopt social distancing measures at the right moment and in the right dose, more lives could be saved, and the economic impact could be reduced during the pandemic. To make this possible, a predictive control system was developed within the CoVida Network, the result of a scientific collaboration between researchers from the Center for Data Integration and Health Knowledge (Cidacs/Fiocruz…

In 2020, research operations did not take place in Antarctica due to the restrictions enforced by the COVID-19 pandemic. At the same time, the current public health crisis has shown the importance of knowledge in health, of surveillance, and of an integration of human, environmental, and animal health, in order to respond to present and future challenges. For this reason, teams are preparing for new research missions this year and are already debating ways to provide even more robust responses to the Unified Health System (SUS) and to society. The upcoming missions of the FioAntar project (…

A recently published study, with the participation of the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation - Fiocruz, suggests that the Delta variant of the new coronavirus, first detected in India, may increase the risk of reinfection. The research shows that the serum of people previously infected by other strains is less powerful against this viral variant. The problem is markedly observed among individuals previously infected by the Gamma variant, originally identified in Manaus, Brazil, and currently the dominant strain in the country, as well as by the Beta variant, first detected in South Africa. In these…

The notion that health crises unfairly and disproportionately affect vulnerable populations was observed and documented during the greatest health crisis of this century. Furthermore, studies have shown that the distribution of COVID-19 is unequal among different ethnic and socioeconomic groups (Horta, 2020 and Wang, 2020) iii. They also highlight the importance of prejudice and systemic racism as elements that, when intertwined with biological characteristics, behaviors, and environmental factors, lead people to a situation of inequitable social…

In addition to processing the tests, Fiocruz is also responsible for their production, having already concluded its committment, signed in 2020 with the Ministry of Health (MS), of delivering 11.7 million molecular tests for Sars-CoV-2. The tests are still being delivered according to the Ministry’s…

Led by Australia, a new trial will investigate whether it is possible to predict who remains susceptible to the variants of Sars-CoV-2, even when they received a vaccine against COVID-19 or have already been sick due to the virus. The research will be exploring the immune response of vaccines specific against the disease in Brazilian health workers, in order to identify biomarkers that can indicate whether someone will be protected (or remains at risk of contracting COVID-19), if exposed to a variant of Sars-CoV-2. The study received philanthropic financing from the Bill & Melinda Gates…

The study also reveals an 86% reduction in hospitalizations in areas treated with Wolbachia, proof that the effectiveness of the method is equivalent for all four serotypes of dengue fever. “These results show how Wolbachia can be a…
