Data released this Thursday (August 26th) by the Wolbachia Method, an initiative of the World Mosquito Program (WMP) led by Fiocruz in Brazil, indicate a reduction of about 70% of cases of dengue fever, 60% of chikungunya, and 40% of zika in the areas where the entomological intervention took place.

Published in The New England Journal of Medicine, the results of a randomized controlled trial (RCT) showed a reduction of 77% of cases of dengue fever in areas that received the Aedes aegypti mosquito with Wolbachia, in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. This is the same technique employed in Brazil (the Wolbachia method), an initiative led by Fiocruz in the country.
The study also reveals an 86% reduction in hospitalizations in areas treated with Wolbachia, proof that the effectiveness of the method is equivalent for all four serotypes of dengue fever. “These results show how Wolbachia can be a…

The dengue virus is one of the greatest threats to public health in globe tropical regions, and especially in Brazil, where annual epidemics lead to thousands of Brazilians sickness. In the year 2019 alone, there were 2.1 million cases. However, something very intriguing happened in the years 2017-2018, right after the zika, dengue and chikungunya virus’s triple epidemic in 2016. Dengue fever case numbers were reported well below average until its resurgence in 2019.
In the search for an answer to this phenomenon, a study was carried out in cooperation by researchers from Fiocruz Pernambuco…

Many viruses can hamper coagulation, including those that cause dengue fever and yellow fever. In more severe cases, they may lead to bleeding. This is why these diseases are considered hemorrhagic viral fevers. In a paper recently published in the science magazine “Memórias do Instituto Oswaldo Cruz”, a group of ten researchers argues that the new coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) should be the first agent recognized as acting in the opposite fashion, by increasing the formation of blood clots (also called thrombi) that can obstruct blood flow. Taking into account available evidence of…

An important step to understanding the dynamics of arbovirus transmission, such as dengue fever, zika and chikungunya, is to get to know mosquitoes’ ability to get infected and to transmit the viruses that cause these diseases. This characteristic is technically known as vectorial competence. A study by researchers of the Oswaldo Cruz Institute (IOC/Fiocruz) showed that the Aedes aegypti has low vectorial competence for the zika virus when feeding directly on infected monkeys. The work suggests that virus transmission is much more affected by the high density of the insect in a certain region…

After five years of research, a project led by Fiocruz has reached encouraging results in the search for a therapy to prevent congenital zika syndrome. In an article published on Antiviral Research, the authors show an intense protective effect of sofosbuvir, the antiviral drug currently indicated to treat hepatitis C. In trials with Rhesus monkeys, considered to be the experimental model closest to humans, the drug prevented zika virus transmission from mother to offspring during pregnancy and avoided congenital malformation in 100% of the tests.
Tests confirmed protective action and did…

Most times a pregnant woman goes through a viral infection, such as a common cold, the baby remains protected in the womb. This protection is provided by the placenta, the organ that connects mother and baby and works as a barrier against microorganisms. However, there are pathogens that can overcome this barrier. One example is the zika virus. In 2015 and 2016, it caused a public health emergency of international relevance due to its association with microcephaly.
Months after infection, a cluster of particles of a size compatible with the Zika virus was observed within the placenta cells…
