The dispersion of diseases in the Amazon is directly related to the agricultural development trajectory of municipalities and the loss of biodiversity. Malaria is prevalent in municipalities with an agro-extractivist profile and with forest cover, that is, half of the Amazon territory. Dengue and chikungunya occur more frequently in municipalities of recent urban expansion, such as on the southern edge of the Amazon in transition to the Cerrado. Cutaneous leishmaniasis is prevalent in municipalities with large herds where there are higher rates of deforestation and loss of biodiversity. COVID…

Difficulties faced by African countries regarding COVID-19 are not limited to vaccines. Resources are also needed for the logistics of an immunization campaign, which involves cold rooms and even power generators, explains Augusto Paulo Silva, researcher of the Fiocruz Global Health Center (CRIS/Fiocruz) for African Issues and for cooperation between Africa & Community of Portuguese Language Countries (CPLP in the Portuguese acronym).
“Many countries were forced to return vaccines because they were not able to apply them, due to the lack of funding for vaccination campaigns”, explains…

In the International Year of Health and Care Workers, this workforce is depleted. They have been the targets of applauses and assaults, seen old problems worsen, and become victims of the very COVID-19 they help fight. This panorama was outlined during the webinar Human Resources in Health in a Pandemic, promoted by the Fiocruz Global Health Center (CRIS/Fiocruz), on August 4th. With Francisco Eduardo Campos mediation, a public health and human resources specialist, the seminar showed that it is also necessary to prepare for the post-pandemic, so that the current situation of overload does…

Throughout history, there are many records of disasters that decimated entire populations, cities, states and civilizations. None of those had the same level that the climate change crisis foresees. UN’s secretary-general, António Guterres, stated that the report of Group I of the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) is “a code red for humanity”. The report contained compelling evidence that the gas emissions from fossil fuel combustion and deforestation are smothering the planet and endangering billions of people. Guterres also stated that the report “might sound like a death-…

Women are the majority in the healthcare workforce. Yet they are far from leadership positions, face unequal pay, and are often victims of bullying and sexual harassment. If the panorama described in the webinar Women in Global Health, promoted by the Fiocruz Global Health Center (Cris/Fiocruz) on the last 15th, seems bleak, it also brings foci of hope: at the same time that it exacerbated these inequalities, the COVID-19 pandemic shed light on them, broadening the debate around the theme and the search for solutions.
Coordinated by the Fiocruz vice-president of Education, Information…

A Swedish study with people infected by the Sars-CoV-2 and with subjects immunized with the Oxford/AstraZeneca (produced in Brazil by Fiocruz), Pfizer/BioNTech vaccines, and with people who were given one dose of each vaccine shows good protection 12 months after vaccination, against the so-called variants of concern. Submitted as preprint (without peer review), the research shows that two doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine result in the smallest reduction in effectiveness in neutralization assays against the Gamma and Beta variants, those with the most significant drops in effectiveness in all…
